February 02, 1988|TERRY ATKINSON | Compiled by Terry Atkinson

"Susana." "Wuthering Heights." Media/Cinemateque Collection. $59.95 each. Even many of his fans have missed a few of director Luis Bunuel's films from his Mexican period (1945-60)--at least the ones that tend to be called "potboilers." However, as these simultaneous video releases reveal, the lesser melodramas have their sporadic delights. "Susana" (1951) is especially fun, detailing the disruption that a young temptress brings to a farm family. Bunuel is more straightforward if not very faithful in his version of the Bronte novel (the original Mexican title was "Abismos de Pasion"), but his unique comic vision comes through at times, especially in the two male characters--one a lily-livered husband, another a suitor so callous he's hilarious. Both films are represented by excellent black-and-white prints and feature clear, literate subtitles. Information: (213) 216-7900. "Susana" *** "Heights" ** 1/2
