A Santee couple were killed Sunday night when their car rammed into the rear of a tractor-trailer rig on Interstate 8 in Alpine, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The Sandviks and Mrs. Sandvik's 14-year-old son, Robert Rhodes, had to be extricated from the van.

The Sandviks were pronounced dead at the scene, one mile west of Tavern Road, at 11:45 p.m. Rhodes, who was asleep in the rear of the van when the accident occurred, suffered a leg injury.
