Firm Fined for Failing to Act on Heater Defects

February 04, 1988|Associated Press

WASHINGTON — The Consumer Product Safety Commission said Wednesday that BernzOmatic Co. has agreed to pay a $350,000 civil penalty to settle charges that it failed to report defects in some of its camping heaters.

The commission charged that BernzOmatic failed to report defects in its propane-fueled heaters that could create a substantial hazard until the safety agency investigated the deaths of two campers in 1986.

BernzOmatic denied the existence of a substantial hazard with its heaters, but it agreed to the settlement, the commission reported.
