Uganda Imposing Gasoline Rationing

February 05, 1988|Associated Press

KAMPALA, Uganda — This East African nation is starting long-term gasoline rationing after years of periodic fuel crises.

Energy Minister Jabel Bidandi-Ssali ordered all vehicle owners, including those with tractors and motor boats, to register at their nearest gasoline stations in the next 10 days. He did not say how he plans to allocate fuel rations.

"This rationing is part of government policy and is here to stay," Frederick Ssekandi, head of the the ministry's petroleum department, told state-owned Radio Uganda on Wednesday.
