Soviets Conduct 1st A-Test of '88

MOSCOW — The Soviet Union on Saturday conducted its first nuclear test of the year, at the Semipalatinsk range in Kazakhstan, the Tass news agency said.

The blast measured the equivalent of 20,000 tons of TNT and was conducted "with a view to checking the results of studies in the field of physics," the news agency said.

The last known Soviet nuclear explosion was Dec. 27.
