American Dan Jansen won the 500 meters for the second straight day and survived a sixth-place finish in the final 1,000-meter event to win the World Sprint Speed Skating championships at Milwaukee.
Jansen won three of four races in the two-day competition at the Wisconsin Olympic Ice Rink, just a few miles from his West Allis, Wis., home. For Jansen and many of the other skaters, the races were a tuneup for the Calgary Olympics that start next weekend.
Jansen had 155.975 points in the four-race competition. East Germany's Uew-Jens Mey was second with 156.695 points and American Eric Flaim third with 157.065.
East German world record-holder Christa Rothenburger was beaten by American Bonnie Blair in a head-to-head showdown at 500 meters, but still won the women's title by less than a point over teammate Karin Kania.
