Tommy Howard of San Fernando High and Damiean Jenkins of Saugus will sign with Cal State Northridge and Marcel Sellers of Birmingham will sign with Cal Lutheran today--the first day high school players are allowed to sign football letters of intent.

Howard, 5-11, 160 pounds, who will play cornerback at Northridge, was a two-way starter for San Fernando. He had 5 interceptions on defense and 41 catches for 681 yards and 7 touchdowns as a wide receiver.

Jenkins (6-3, 230) is a defensive tackle who was second-team All-Golden League for the Centurions.

Sellers (5-6, 145) will be used as a running back, receiver and kick returner at Cal Lutheran. Last season, he played just five games while nursing a broken collarbone but still rushed for 492 yards (7.6 yards per carry) and 7 touchdowns.

CSUN also signed Jim Burke of Woodbridge High in Irvine, Dave Herbert of West Covina and John Goyich of Azusa High.

Burke (6-2, 195) was an All-Pacific Coast League linebacker and helped Woodbridge to a 13-1 season and the championship of the Desert Mountain Conference. He averaged 9 solo tackles a game and had 3 interceptions.

Burke committed to Northridge on Tuesday on the condition that he be released from his letter should he be accepted at West Point.

Herbert (6-3, 215), was an All-Valle Vista League center.

Goyich (6-1, 205) was first-team All-Montview League, second-team Times All-San Gabriel Valley and gained almost 900 yards (7.1 yards per carry) as a fullback for Azusa, the same school that produced Northridge backup quarterback Sherdrick Bonner two years ago.

Northridge also is expected to sign four junior college players today, which would bring the total number of JC players signed by the Matadors to 23.

Mike Meehan, a 6-5, 250-pound defensive tackle from Southwestern College; Rod Weber, a 6-1, 265-pound nose tackle from San Bernardino Valley; and linebackers Andre Washington (6-2, 250) from Glendale and Jeff Dixon (6-3, 225) from San Jose City have given CSUN verbal commitments.

Fourteen junior college and four-year transfers have been enrolled at Cal Lutheran since Feb. 1, including linebacker Darris Wilson (6-3, 265) and Chris Gnau (6-3, 215) from Valley, lineman Griffith Boyster (6-6, 260) from San Bernardino Valley College and defensive tackle Richard Toll (6-2, 240) and tight end Ken Whitney (6-4, 265) from Gavilan College in Gilroy, Calif.

Scott Reisbord of Monroe, a 6-1, 200-pound linebacker who was co-defensive player of the year in the Sunset League last season, will attend Northridge as a walk-on in hope of earning a scholarship.
