Local News in Brief : Light-Rail Study OKd

February 11, 1988

The Los Angeles County Transportation Commission on Wednesday unanimously approved preparation of an environmental impact statement for part of a proposed South Bay trolley line--thus sending a strong message to San Fernando Valley residents that if they do not want a light-rail line, other areas will get one instead.

The route that will be examined during a nine-month, $200,000 study would go from El Segundo to Marina del Rey, passing near Los Angeles International Airport as it heads north from aerospace and defense companies in the El Segundo employment area.

After extensive discussions on the future of rail transportation in the metropolitan area, the commission refused to go forward with an environmental study on the longer, southern leg of the proposed South Bay line, which would go from El Segundo to Torrance.
