February 11, 1988|Associated Press

SEOUL, South Korea — President-elect Roh Tae Woo today appointed leading moderate Lee Hyun Jae as premier, in line with plans for broad democratic reforms.

An economics professor, Lee is widely known in South Korea as a moderate who has criticized authoritarian rule and human rights abuses in the past. He is also a leading scholar and noted economic specialist. Roh announced Lee's appointment two weeks before he is scheduled to take over Feb. 25 as president when Chun Doo Hwan steps down.
