"The Cult of the L.A. Body" might have created an impression that one could alter body appearance as easily as changing clothes. However, even in successful plastic surgery, there is a period of adjustment during which patients integrate their new physical appearance into an established body image. Individuals can experience depression and a feeling of being "lost" in their new body. Consideration of the patient's emotional state before the surgery is critical.
