College Baseball : Hoffman Leads Arizona Past Fullerton, 13-6

Trevor Hoffman drove in four runs Saturday, sparking a pair of Arizona rallies in a 13-6 baseball victory over Cal State Fullerton at Tucson.

Hoffman, who played at Savanna High School and Cypress College, had a two-run double during the Wildcats' four-run second inning, then singled for two runs in Arizona's three-run fifth.

The Titans (5-6) had a two-run home run from Mike Ross and a bases-empty homer from Jim Osborne. Arizona is 10-3.

Cal State Fullerton took a 1-0 lead in the second on Jason Rolish's run-scoring single, but Arizona took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the inning and made it 6-1 on Glenn Baxler's two-run home run in the third.

The Titans rallied for four runs in the fifth to cut the deficit to 6-5. Mark Razook tripled in one run and scored on Rex Peter's double before Ross hit his two-run home run. After Arizona scored three times in the bottom of the inning, Osborne hit his home run off Arizona starter Heath Lane (4-0) to pull Fullerton within three runs, 9-6. Barry Ledbetter came on in relief to shut out the Titans the rest of the way.

J.T. Snow, who played at Los Alamitos High School, added a bases-empty home run during Arizona's three-run seventh.

Mark Beck (1-3), the first of four Titans pitchers, allowed eight runs and as many hits in four innings.

In other nonconference games:

UC Irvine 9, Santa Clara 3--Second baseman Jeff Oberdank went 3 for 5 with a double and an RBI to lead UC Irvine at home. Irvine (5-5) scored six unearned runs--two in the second, three in the fourth and one in the sixth. Al Rodriguez went 2 for 4 and scored two runs for UCI.

Winning pitcher Craig Brink (2-1) pitched a complete game, allowing 10 hits and striking out 3.

Santa Clara's Troy Buckley went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two doubles.

Sonoma State 10, Southern California College 4--Ken Weatherby's three-run home run in the third inning gave Sonoma State an early lead at SCC. Sonoma scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to increase the lead to 5-1.

SCC (2-6) scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 5-4, but Sonoma scored one run in the seventh, three in the eighth and one in the ninth. Winning pitcher Bob Bowman went five innings and allowed two hits, two runs and struck out four.

Grand Canyon College 6, Chapman 2--Mike Webster pitched a complete game and struck out 11 for Grand Canyon at Hart Park Saturday. Webster (1-1) allowed just seven hits and one run. Tim Salmon, one of four Grand Canyon players with two hits, led off the second inning with a solo home run off loser Jim Bennett (0-1). Tony Gardea and Jeff Kidwiler each had two hits for Chapman (6-3-1).
