Scented Mail

February 21, 1988

It is time to do something about those responsible for a growing problem--perfume-scented envelopes. I can be six feet away from my mail box and know it's bill day from the department stores. Why must they dip their return envelopes in Elizabeth Taylor's new perfume?

Don't get me wrong. I have nothing against Elizabeth Taylor (purple is one of my favorite colors) but drenching envelopes in perfume must stop. I have allergies and I don't need the sneezing, burning eyes and headache that result from handling those envelopes. I tried holding my breath, but I turn blue and pass out. This is only a mild reaction compared to the damage that can be caused to someone who reacts to these fragrances in more disastrous ways than I do.

This is a serious problem that must be dealt with now--and, hopefully, before the next bills come.
