Santa Clara (17-8, 8-4) trailed most of the second half until center Dan Weiss scored to give the Broncos a 34-33 lead with 1:43 left.
St. Mary's (17-7, 8-4) didn't score in the final 4 minutes 39 seconds and had its seven-game winning streak snapped. Eric Newman scored 11 points for the Gaels.
