"Wheel of Fortune" host Pat Sajak is close to an agreement with CBS to host a late-night talk show that would challenge NBC's "Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson, a CBS spokeswoman confirmed. But several weeks earlier Sajak spilled the beans during an appearance on the David Letterman show--produced by future competitor Carson. Letterman suggested that Sajak's foray as a talk-show host would seem doomed to failure, considering the fate of other shows that have tried and failed to erode Carson's ratings. Sajak was unperturbed; he plans to continue his well-paid position with "Wheel," which enters its sixth season in syndication this fall.
