****Excellent***Good**Fair*Poor : COMPACT DISCS

February 24, 1988|ROBERT HILBURN | Compiled by Terry Atkinson

"Innervisions." Stevie Wonder. Tamla. Unlike record companies that tend to put only their least attractive albums in budget CD packages, Motown has channeled many of its most popular and acclaimed releases--including this album on its Tamla subsidiary--in its budget 9000 series (CDs retailing for about $9.99 each). The "Innervisions" LP was the first of three consecutive socially conscious and musically stimulating collections that won album-of-the-year Grammys for Wonder in the '70s. Some of the synthesizer-based music seems almost commonplace today, but that is more a tribute to the enormous impact of Wonder's music on '80s pop-soul than a criticism of the music. ****
