February 25, 1988

Brenda Longe and Shelly Schack scored 21 points each to lead Cerritos College to a 74-62 victory over Orange Coast in a Southern California women's regional playoff basketball game Wednesday at Cerritos.

OCC trailed, 11-1 and 30-17, in the first half but tied the score, 34-34, with 17:05 left in the game.

But Cerritos (24-8) went on a 13-0 run before OCC finally scored again on a pair of free throws by Kim Ellerman to cut the lead to 47-36 with 11:39 left. Ellerman then fouled out with 10:43 left and the OCC offense turned to forward Gilly Powell.

Powell, a freshman who averaged 22 points a game, scored a game-high 28 points, including 21 in the second half and 17 of her team's final 26 points after Ellerman fouled out.

OCC (16-15) cut the lead to 63-57 with 2:38 left, but Schack and Longe each made a steal and layup to put Cerritos up, 67-57, with 2:10 left.

OCC ends the season at 16-15. Cerritos plays host Los Angeles Valley Friday for a berth in the state tournament March 3-5 at American River College.
