Controversy Over Oil Drilling in the Pacific Palisades

March 19, 1988

What motivates an Armand Hammer to assert his desires over the welfare and wisdom of so many? Why is he willing to use every influential tool to violate a beautiful coastline? Does he need the money? Or does he need to exert his considerable power?

It is not because the oil he is taking from our earth is going to make a significant contribution to our energy needs. The only significance will be that he got his way one more time; the hungry corporate animal that empowers him is momentarily satiated. Our environmental suicide means damn little when it comes to a buck.
