Local News in Brief : Counselor of Gays Backed

March 22, 1988

Los Angeles Unified School District Supt. Leonard Britton and school board members voiced strong support Monday for high school teacher Virginia Uribe and her counseling program for homosexual students.

Uribe, who teaches at Fairfax High School and works part time counseling homosexual students and consulting with administrators at other schools, came under fire earlier this month from Republicans in the Assembly.

Assemblywoman Marian La Follette (R-Northridge) led the GOP caucus in voting to withhold new funds for the school district until it stops supporting Uribe's "Project 10" counseling program.

"I realize that to some, our Project 10 counseling program can be considered controversial and uncomfortable," Britton said before presentation of a plaque to Uribe in recognition of her work.

"But it must be remembered that the Los Angeles Unified School District is a school system for all students--gifted, regular, LEP (limited English proficient), orthopedically handicapped, blind, talented, and those with personal or psychological problems which hinder their learning," he said.
