Glendale's Herbert Hoover High School drill team won a top prize this week in the nation's most prestigious drill team competition, Miss Drill Team USA.
In the finals at the Los Angeles Sports Arena, the 54 girls and 16 boys on the team took first place in the show routine category, winning $1,000 and the chance to compete at the Miss Drill Team International competition in Tokyo this July.
The Hoover team competed against other finalist teams that were selected from among almost 6,000 teams from around the country. The Hoover team also won honors in some of the eight other categories at the competition, taking second place in the novelty category, third in the short flags routine and fourth in the military style category.
Team directors Kathi Sarkin and Carmen Poloni choreographed the winning routine.
