Friday, appointed by Commerce Secretary C. William Verity Jr., succeeds Richard Hallgren, who left the department to become executive director of the American Meteorological Society.

Friday was director of the Defense Department's Office of Environmental and Life Sciences before retiring from the Air Force to join the Weather Service.
