RELIGION : Two Protestant Denominations Move Closer Toward 'Full Communion'

April 02, 1988|Associated Press

ST. LOUIS — Executive bodies of two Protestant denominations have agreed that their new ecumenical partnership eventually will involve "mutual recognition of members and ordained ministers" and "full communion."

The statement was approved in a joint meeting of the executive council of the 1.7-million-member United Church of Christ and administrative committee of the 1.1-million-member Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

Officials of the two denominations, which declared a working ecumenical partnership in 1985, said it is not "the full unity to which God calls us" but "we are working toward a time" when it will be.
