WHARNCLIFFE, W.Va. — A fire at the Wharncliffe Volunteer Fire Department engulfed the building before firefighters could get their fire truck out, officials said.

"I was just devastated," Fire Chief James Dotson said.

Dotson arrived at the firehouse early Tuesday and said he found a storage building connected to the station engulfed in flames. The firehouse was still intact, but the heat was so intense he could not get inside. By the time firefighters from nearby Gilbert arrived, the station's ceiling had collapsed.
