Mickey Cureton, acting principal at Lynwood High School since February, has been named principal of the 2,500-student campus effective July 1.
By a unanimous vote, the five-member Board of Education last week selected Cureton to replace Principal Larry C. Tripplett, who abruptly left the school. Tripplett resigned effective July 1 but has been on medical leave since February.
Cureton, 37, was a football player at Centennial High School in Compton in the late 1960s before playing football for UCLA.
Cureton earned a bachelor degree in political science from UCLA and a master's in education and administration from Cal State Los Angeles.
Cureton, who lives in Harbor City, is married and has a 16-year-old daughter. He came to Lynwood High in 1979 as dean of students and most recently has been assistant principal.
