Armed Forces Day is officially celebrated on the third Saturday of May and honors all branches of the U.S. armed services. First observed in 1950, the holiday replaced separate celebrations for the Air Force, Army and Navy.

Here in the county:

Marine Corps Air Station Tustin will mark the occasion Sunday with an open house featuring displays of modern and vintage aircraft and ground support equipment, as well as entertainment by the 1st Marine Division Band, a USO show, helicopter flying demonstrations, a show of more than 300 classic automobiles and a raffle benefitting the Navy Relief Fund.

The day begins at 8 a.m. with a 5- and 10-kilometer run. Entry fees are $8 with T-shirt and $6 without, jumping to $8 and $10 on the day of the race (Same-day registration will be held from 6:30-7:30 a.m.). A pancake breakfast begins at 10 a.m. Events are expected to last through the afternoon.

Naval Weapons Station, Seal Beach will not have an open house but will take part in a display May 19-22 at Del Amo Fashion Center in Torrance.

Marine Corps Air Station El Toro recently held an open house and air show and will not have any public observances of Armed Forces Day.
