Jonathan Lew, president of the Sunny Hills High School chapter of Future Business Leaders of America, finished first in economics at the recent FBLA state competition at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim. Lew, as state champion, will compete in the nationals in Cincinnati in June.
At the FBLA sectional competition at Kennedy High School in March, Sunny Hills students Janet Kim (top five, Miss FBLA) and James Moon (top five, information processing) won awards, as did the team of Yuka Yonebayashi, Grace Pak, Jennifer Yueh, Eveleen Liu and Bryan Matsuyoshi (eighth place, Parliamentary Procedure).
This is the club's first year back at the Fullerton campus, according to adviser Sandra Talley, chairperson of the school's business department. The national organization marks its 45th anniversary this year.
Jewel Plummer Cobb, news Cal State Fullerton president, announced that 12 local high school students are receiving special scholarships designated by her office.
Ten high school students who are entering Cal State Fullerton in the fall will receive President's Scholarships; two others will get President's Opportunity Scholarships. Both types of scholarships are for $1,000 a year for four years of college. The scholarships are awarded "on the basis of the students' superior academic and extracurricular performance," the university said.
The 10 President's Scholarship winners are: David L. Buck (Fullerton High School), John Kuan Shen Chen and Seven D. Reeter (Garden Grove), Eric J. Fano and Cristy G. Lomenzo (Esperanza), Alexander B. MacInnis (Mater Dei), Alison C. Quirion (Buena Park), Jennifer M. Segletes (California High in Whittier), Stewart S. Vachal (Troy) and Cynthia M. Wolf (El Dorado).
The two President's Opportunity Scholarship winners are Grace D. Garcia (Katella) and Cindy M. Madrid (Rosary).
The Swingphonic news youth orchestra, a group composed of 35 high school and college students from throughout Orange County, will perform a pops music concert at Disneyland's Carnation Plaza at 1:30 p.m. on May 22.
Peterson, in her first year with Swingphonic, has directed public school bands and orchestras for 16 years. She said the orchestra is "basically a jazz band with strings."
