The Mature Traveler

Packages for Hawaii Link Golf and Sightseeing

June 12, 1988|HANK KOVELL | Kovell is a veteran journalist in seniors' interests

Hawaii remains a high-priority destination for many mature travelers. It's also the top choice of Americans for summer vacations, according to an American Express survey.

Among the tour operators who package tours to Hawaii are Laguna Hills-based Trieloff Tours, which is very active in planning travel for mature travelers. Its destinations include Alaska, Canada, Mexico and the South Pacific, plus a wide choice of cruises. All of Trieloff's tours can be arranged through travel agents.

Trieloff's "Hawaii 1988" brochure lists escorted sightseeing and golf vacations to Hawaii, with visits to 2 to 4 islands from 8 to 15 days. There is still a wide selection of departure dates from which to choose for the rest of this year.

All tours include features such as round-trip air transportation from the mainland via Delta Airlines, a full-time escort in the Islands and inter-island flights. Also flower leis on arrival and departure, a mai tai party on arrival, baggage handling, first-class hotels, airport transfers, Pearl Harbor and Oahu tours and a deluxe travel bag. Additional tours to major attractions on neighbor islands are included, depending on islands visited.

Golfers' Special

One favorite is Trieloff's golf tour, a 10-day trip to three islands--Oahu, Kauai and the Big Island of Hawaii. It includes all of the above-mentioned bonus features plus five rounds of golf on the three islands. The plan covers greens fees, electric carts, tournament prizes and transportation to and from hotels to the golf courses. Special tours are provided for non-golfing companions.

The all-inclusive price for the Golf in Hawaii package is $1,399 per person, double occupancy, or $1,049 if the second person is a non-golfer. The package includes round-trip air transportation from California.

The "Hawaii 1988" brochure describes four tours of the Islands from two islands in eight days to five islands in 15 days, plus the Golf in Hawaii tour. All tours are described in detail, as are the five featured golf courses.

Escorted Tours

Other Trieloff tours available during 1988 include:

--New Zealand, Australia and Fiji: 22 days with one departure date in October and three in November.

--Escorted 11-day tours to Alaska on the Daphne, a ship of Italian registry, with departures from Vancouver during the summer months and air fare from Southern California included. Prices determined by cabin location aboard the Daphne beginning at $1,599 per person.

--Cruises to the Caribbean and Mexican Riviera are scheduled for fall and winter, plus a special cruise on the Mississippi Queen steamboat as part of a tour of the Dixieland South.

--A Canadian Rockies 13-day tour with full-time escort, including Lake Louise, Banff, Jasper National Park, Vancouver, Victoria and other places in Western Canada. The tour begins in Seattle on Aug. 5 and includes air transportation from Los Angeles to Seattle at $1,299 per person.

--A fall foliage cruise tour to New England and Eastern Canada for 15 days, including seven days aboard the Bermuda Star, visiting ports in New England and Eastern Canada, plus Quebec City, Nova Scotia and Montreal. Price is $1,799 per person. Departure date from Los Angeles is Sept. 15.

Brochures with complete descriptions of the above destinations, including daily itineraries, sightseeing, hotels, meals and other features are available from most travel agents. Or write, specifying your destination, to Trieloff Tours, P.O. Box 2100, Laguna Hills 92653.

Palms Springs Savings

Summer specials for seniors are being offered in the Palm Springs area by member resorts of the Desert Resorts Visitors Bureau.

Specials may include room discounts, a free tour, discounts on meals, free use of facilities such as health clubs and tennis courts and a complimentary bottle of wine or champagne. While the effective dates for these specials vary among the resorts, they are generally valid from now through the end of September.

A separate promotion of interest to senior golfers is the Desert Summer Golf Extravaganza, which provides packages for 3, 5 or 7 nights at a choice of 1 of 25 resort hotels, plus golfing at one or more of 15 area golf courses.

Packages include one round of golf plus cart for each night of a three- or five-night package, or six rounds on the seven-night package. The cost per person for a three-night package begins at $135 and is determined by the hotel selected. Prices for a five-night package start at $225, from $286 for seven nights. Extra nights, including one round of golf for each night booked, are available at modest cost. Some accommodations are all-suite resorts and condominiums.

Non-golfing companions occupying the same room may deduct $20 a night from prices. Tee times are guaranteed up to three months in advance. The Golf Extravaganza packages are effective until Sept. 15.
