**** "The Lost Weekend"
MCA. $59.95. 1945.
An alcoholic writer, his weekend binge, his steady descent, a nightmarish detox ward. Full of cruelly exact observations of the seedy edges of the city and the drunkard's desperate stratagems to stay afloat, this multi-Oscar-winning adaptation of Charles Jackson's novel shows Billy Wilder in a serious mood. Only the ending seems forced or false; otherwise, it's still a gutsy, graceful film.
