June 23, 1988

The West German women's national volleyball team defeated the U.S. national B team, 15-9, 15-8, 15-5, Wednesday night at Torrey Pines High School.

The teams will meet again tonight at 7:30 at Carlsbad High.

The West Germans will meet the U.S. Olympic team at UC San Diego at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The San Diego Volleyball Club's 18-and-under team beat the Las Vegas Juniors, 15-7, 15-13, 15-2, in the opening round of the Sports Mart International tournament in South Bend, Ind.

San Diego, rated the No. 1 junior team in the country, was led by University of San Diego High School senior Alicia Turner, who had 12 kills.

In an earlier exhibition match, San Diego fell to a South Korea junior team, 15-1, 15-7.

The local team plays one match today. Finals of the tournament are scheduled for Saturday.

Teammates Phil Mickelson and Manuel Zerman of University of San Diego High School finished one-two in the 54-hole Great Lakes Buick junior tournament in Flint, Mich.

Mickelson, 18, fired a course-record two-under-par 214 to take his second consecutive American Junior Golf Assn. tournament. He won the Nabisco Mission Hills Desert junior tournament last week in Rancho Mirage.

In the final round, Mickelson fired a one-under-par 71 despite 35- to 40-m.p.h. winds and rain showers.

Zerman, from Durban, South Africa, was runner-up in the boys' 15-18 division, with a final-round 73 for a 218 total.

Keith Sbarbaro of San Diego shot a 226.
