City's Sweep of Two Downtown Homeless Encampments

July 02, 1988

There must be no more incidents of this kind. The majority of the members of the LAPD are probably decent, well-mannered individuals, yet some of them forget that they are not always dealing with rabid gang members, desperate junkies, or deranged characters. There is no need to treat them like hardened criminals. This attitude usually results in utter rage, confusion and terror seizing the individual apprehended, either making his or her case worse, or making a case where there wasn't one in the first place. So, before we sing paeans of praise to the unique and wonderful American way of life, let us look at it a little more closely and all do our best to make reality conform to the model.
