Gabriele Reinsch, 24, of East Germany set a world record with a throw of 252 feet in the women's discus at Neubrandenburg, East Germany.
The previous mark of 244-7 was set by Zdenka Silhava of Czechoslovakia on Aug. 26, 1984, at Nitra, Czechoslovakia.
The record fell on Reinsch's first attempt in a meet between East Germany and Italy.
Last year, Reinsch had a best of 220-5.
Heike Drechsler of East Germany won the women's long jump at 24-6 1/2, the second best mark in history. The record is 24-8, set last month by Galina Chistyakova of the Soviet Union.
Marlies Gohr of East Germany equaled the world best this year in the women's 100 meters with a time of 10.89 seconds. American sprinter Florence Griffith-Joyner posted the same time last month in San Diego.
