Resisting 'Temptation'

July 16, 1988

Larry Poland and his Bible-thumping band of book burners want distribution of "The Last Temptation of Christ" stopped and they even want the prints destroyed! They stopped short, however, of demanding that director Martin Scorsese be put to trial by torture or burned at the stake for heresy.

I do not know if Poland and his posse consider dreaming about sex (as depicted in the film) a sin, but personally I agree with C. S. Lewis that even though (waking) sins of the flesh are transgressions, they shrink in significance beside sins of the heart, such as hatred and intolerance.
