Movies to Tape

July 17, 1988

The Rules of the Game (Z Sunday at 9 a.m.): One of the all-time great films, Jean Renoir's 1939 production, set at an aristocratic gathering at a country estate, contemplates the decline of the old order as the clouds of war gather. Marcel Dalio stars. (1:46)

Carmen Jones (Channel 11 Tuesday at 12:30 a.m.): Otto Preminger's sultry and vital 1954 film of the Bizet opera showcases the beauty and talent of the late, ill-fated Dorothy Dandridge. (2:00)

Knife in the Water (Bravo Wednesday at 5 p.m., again at 9 p.m. and 1 a.m.): Roman Polanski's first feature, made in Poland in 1962, is a tour-de-force handling of the eternal triangle, its setting confined entirely to a yacht. (1:37)

Giant (Channel 5 Saturday at 1:30 a.m.): George Stevens' epic 1956 Texas saga, much better than the Edna Ferber novel upon which it is based, is one of the most memorable films of the '50s, starring Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson and James Dean. (4:00)
