It's surprising how many campgrounds are available in California, many within a short drive from cities. "California Camping--The Complete Guide" by Tom Stienstra lists more than 1,500 campgrounds, including many little-known sites. There's advice about the latest camping and cooking gear, clothing, shoes, bags, tents and recreational equipment. There are maps, information on facilities, locations, who to contact and much more (Foghorn Press: $15.95).
