Tolerance Should Be Rewarded, Not Punished

July 23, 1988

Rich Roberts' article (July 13) on mountain bicyclists makes me wonder how our public lands are managed.

It seems the motorcyclists are tolerant of everyone, the mountain bicyclists intolerant of motorcyclists, the horsemen intolerant of all but hikers and the hikers intolerant of everyone but themselves.

Instead of our U.S. Forest Service requiring the most tolerant groups to consistently come up on the short end of compromises and land closures, I think it's time to start to favor the groups that are willing to let the largest number of groups utilize our public land.

Our government should stand up to intolerance.
