THE OUTDOORS : Pyramid Lake Has Surprise: Black Bass

July 27, 1988

Most summertime fishermen at Los Angeles County's Pyramid Lake are there to catch big striped bass.

And while anglers have been doing well with the stripers--Maywood's Fred Peterson caught a 33-pounder early in the week--a consistent black bass bite has been a pleasant surprise.

It has not been uncommon for fishermen to catch both smallmouths and largemouths. For instance, Gabriel Jellen of Van Nuys recently caught a 4-pound smallmouth, then cast again and landed a 7-pound largemouth.
