Stadium Smokers

August 14, 1988

I applaud Mike Gotch's efforts to ban smoking in the seats at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium. His proposal would allow everybody to win. Smokers would be allowed to smoke in the aisles or out by the concession stands. Private boxes and the press box would not be included in the ban.

There is overwhelming evidence that secondary smoke is as dangerous to nonsmokers as smoking is to smokers. I can't tell you how many times my husband and I have returned home from Charger games with blind, sick headaches from the chain smokers around us. Gotch's proposal would afford us some protection.

I think it is very interesting that smoking is prohibited both at the tables and in the stands at the San Diego Pops concerts. Smokers can smoke only outside the fence surrounding the area. This is a totally open area, and, if it can be made to work here, it certainly can be made to work in the stadium.
