Perhaps Gretzky Trade Meant to Please Phonies

August 27, 1988

Was Wayne Gretzky worth it? Only time will tell. In my opinion, Marty McSorley and Mike Krushelnyski will be more of an asset. Jimmy Carson has 15 more years left. Gretzky? Who knows. With four years remaining on his contract, he just might decide to move elsewhere. For a person who hates to fly, he sure came to the wrong place.

I hope Wayne & Co. will help the Kings to more than respectability. A Cup is not so farfetched now.

But all this leaves me to wonder. What will become of the true King fans? Will they succumb to Jerry Buss' Prime Ticket network? Or will they have to pay $50 just to see Vancouver.

In trying to build the team, Bruce McNall ended up catering to the phony. How to identify a phony? If someone is wearing a King hat or jersey, ask them if they wore a black armband when Whitey Widing died, and check out their reaction.
