Pasadena : Kindergarten Fund Grows

September 01, 1988

Pasadena Unified School District has announced that the Weingart Foundation of Los Angeles has contributed $100,000 to the district's proposed new kindergarten for 4-year-old children, which is scheduled to open this fall.

The money will be added to contributions from Richard Riordan of Los Angeles and John and Dorothy Shea of Pasadena, who helped to start the new program by contributing half of the $1.4 million it is expected to cost in the first year.

The program is designed to help about 600 4-year-olds meet language and basic education needs before they enter traditional kindergarten at the age of 5. Private funding is being sought since the state does not fund a second year of kindergarten.
