The Debt Goes On

September 08, 1988|Clipboard researched by Dallas Jamison, Henry Rivero and Rick VanderKnyff / Los Angele Times. Graphics by Doris Shields / Los Angeles Times

If you think lines at the bank seem longer, perhaps it isn't your imagination. In June, county residents borrowed $1.3 billion to finance home purchases. While that is about $300 million more than was borrowed for the same purpose in San Diego County and more than Riverside and San Bernardino counties combined, it was less than half the amount for Los Angeles County. Here's how we compared:

(amounts listed in millions)

County May 1988 * June 1988 % Change Los Angeles $2,668 $3,298 +23.6 Orange County 1,033 1,312 +27.1 San Diego 831 1,006 +21.1 Riverside 353 480 +36.2 San Bernardino 366 455 +24.3 5-County Total 5,251 6,551 +24.8
