Italy Hit by Rail Strike

September 27, 1988|Associated Press

ROME — Italy's train traffic came to a halt Monday as rail workers struck nationwide to protest a government plan to reorganize the state-controlled railways. The plan includes massive layoffs.

The 24-hour strike, which began at 9 p.m. Sunday, stopped all trains, and alternative bus service gave little relief to the stranded passengers.
