Pasadena : Regas Not Chosen as Bishop

October 06, 1988

The Rev. George F. Regas, rector of All Saints Episcopal Church, was a close contender but was not chosen as the successor to the bishop of the New York Episcopal Diocese during a special convention last week.

Regas, 58, a peace activist who heads one of the largest Episcopal congregations in the country, was one of five members of the clergy nominated by New York Diocesan members to succeed Bishop Paul Moore. An All Saints Church spokeswoman said that after 10 ballots by 620 clergy and lay members, Richard Grein, bishop of Kansas, was chosen. Regas' assistant, Ann Peterson, said Regas was second to Grein in some ballots.

Regas was a candidate for bishop of California nine years ago but has since declined other invitations to be a bishop, Peterson said.
