Council Again Delays Vote on Day Laborers

October 06, 1988

Glendale City Council members Tuesday for the second time postponed voting on an ordinance that would make it illegal for day laborers to solicit work while on city property.

Council members voted unanimously to postpone the vote until Dec. 6 so they can evaluate the success of an alternative plan started last week, in which the laborers gather at the Catholic Youth Organization to wait for work.

Numerous complaints from merchants prompted the council to consider an ordinance in an attempt to stop the workers from congregating near a paint store at Broadway and Jackson Street.

The council first postponed the vote in August after members of Latino organizations and several Glendale residents voiced their opposition and urged the city to give them time to come up with another solution.
