San Diego Spotlight: STAGE / NANCY CHURNIN

October 07, 1988|NANCY CHURNIN

Speaking of romance, "The Boy Friend," the USIU season opener at the Theatre in Old Town, should put anyone in the mood for Valentine's Day. The funny and tuneful spoof of the Roaring Twenties put Julie Andrews on the Broadway map 34 years ago. The smooth direction of Jack Tygett, the original bright choreography reproduced by Javier Velasco and the scrumptious costumes by Barry Odom bring out the best in one of USIU's most talented student casts in memory. Even amid this charming ensemble, Danielle LoPreste stands out in the supporting role of the wordly wise French schoolmistress Madame Dubonnet. Seeing her lead the man in the "You Don't Want to Play With Me Blues" is a gem.
