Going, Going, Gong

October 15, 1988

Howard Rosenberg's article about the vice-presidential debate was a classic ("2 Candidates Standing a Heartbeat Away From Meaningless Drivel," Oct. 7).

While other writers treated the event as if it was worthy of serious analysis, Rosenberg captured the absurdity of the candidates' posturing and evasions.

I have a suggestion that will improve such debates and ensure an even larger audience.

The present format and the "Gong Show" format should be mixed, giving a newsperson the right to hit the gong in the event of a non-responsive answer. At this point, the offending candidate's microphone would be turned off and the other candidate could respond to the question, if so bold.
