Reassessments of 'The Lost-Out Generation'

October 23, 1988

Pardon me if I fail to grow lachrymose over the economic plight of The Lost-Out Generation.

Angst , indeed. Do these selfindulgent wimps ever stop sniveling long enough to consider the Angst of Agent-Oranged vets living in cardboard boxes on the fringes of downtown Los Angeles? Or of the legions of "illegal" Latino aliens being hounded by the INS for the crime of trying to feed their children? Or of despairing central city parents whose children turn to gangs and drugs because they see no other escape from economic and spiritual squalor?

No, really, why should one think about such matters when faced with real disaster--like maybe missing out on that trip to Britain.
