Reactions to Republicans Posting Guards at the Polls

November 20, 1988

And I thought that George Bush had cheapened the Pledge of Allegiance during the presidential campaign. He could take lessons from Thomas Fuentes, who invoked the name of the Blessed Virgin in the Voting Booth Goon Squad controversy.

The gall of the man. He may have been merely insensitive to the Hispanic community, rather than deliberately intending wrong toward them. But to hide behind the Blessed Virgin? This should rightfully offend not only Hispanics but all Catholics in the Diocese of Orange, for whom she is patroness.

He can keep his post in the Republican Party for all I care. It's his role in the church that bothers me.
