Cudahy : School Renamed for Hughes

November 24, 1988

Assemblywoman Teresa Hughes (D-Los Angeles), a longtime supporter of public education, has an elementary school named in her honor. Bell New Elementary School No. 1 was renamed during a ceremony Tuesday at the school, 4242 Clara St., Cudahy.

"Teresa Hughes is an ardent fighter for education. She is the best friend we could have in education," said Leticia Quezada, a member of the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education.

As a member of the State Allocation Board and chairman of the Assembly Education Committee, Hughes has been instrumental in getting funds for education, Quezada said. Quezada proposed the renaming and the Board of Education voted 7-0 for approval.

"It is somewhat unusual for the district to name an elementary school after a person. Normally, they are named after the streets where they are located," said Ria Parody, school district public information officer.

More than 800 students are enrolled at the year-round school for kindergarten through sixth grade. The school opened in September.
