November 25, 1988|JOHN VOLAND | Arts and entertainment reports from The Times, national and international news services and the nation's press

An exhibit of 125 original drawings and paintings entitled "The Face Behind the Laugh: Cartoonists' Self-Portraits" will open today at the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco. Among the artists included in the show are Milton Caniff ("Steve Canyon"), Chic Young ("Blondie"), George Herriman ("Krazy Kat") and Al Capp ("Li'l Abner"). "Cartoonists are normally artists who sit at a drawing board observing the public's follies and foibles," says Malcolm Whyte, president of the museum's board of directors. "In this unusual exhibition, we get to see that the artists look like to themselves, and it can be quite revealing." "The Face Behind the Laugh" will remain on display through March 4.
