WEEKEND BOX OFFICE : 'Twins' Wins Weekend Comedy Race

MORNING REPORT

December 13, 1988|NINA J. EASTON | Arts and entertainment reports from The Times, national and international news services and the nation's press

In the holiday battle among three major comedies, Universal's "Twins," enjoyed the second largest opening, grossing $11.2 million at 1,396 screens, an average of $8,005 per screen. (In contrast, Paramount's "Scrooged" with Bill Murray opened at $13 million on fewer screens three weeks ago; the same studio's "Naked Gun" grossed $9.3 million during its opening last weekend). No doubt Universal's impressive "Twins" opening was aided by a massive, attention-grabbing advertising campaign showing Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger dressed alike and standing side by side. Now the question is whether movie-goers will like it enough to tell their friends to go.

* Orion's "Mississippi Burning," considered a prime candidate for Oscar time, grossed $225,034 at nine theaters, a healthy average of $25,003.
