SAN FRANCISCO — The pilot of a commuter helicopter that failed to land as scheduled was presumed dead and Coast Guard rescue crews were forced to suspend their search of San Francisco Bay as night fell Wednesday, officials said.

The pilot, Dennis Williams, 42, of Livermore, was the only person aboard the six-passenger craft.

Earlier Wednesday, searchers found some wreckage from the helicopter--including the steering stick, parts of the fuselage and part of a door--floating in the bay west of Oakland International Airport.

Authorities said the Helicopters Unlimited craft left Oakland about 6 p.m. Tuesday and failed to arrive at Hunters Point shipyard.
